The Wild Boar was imported to the United States by the Spaniards in 1718. Florida was the only region in the U.S. where the boar could adapt. The Spanish and Russian crossed boar that were raised in Central Florida became very big animals, weighing between 150 to 300 pounds, because of the acorns, palmetto berries and freshwater shoreline grasses. On the ranches we hunt, there has been boar killed up to 550 lbs., with 7" tusks, which was listed as number 1 in the record book.
The Lightsey family who owns Brahma Island have been ranchers in this area since 1863. The managers of the Wild Boar hunts are 6th generation cattlemen in Central Florida.
LODGE
The lodge is a large rustic cypress cabin nestled in the middle of the largest freshwater island in the South, which is all prime hunting ground. They can accommodate 19 people in camp, no more than 7 hunters in one group and only 1 guest or nonhunter per group. All linens, blankets, pillows and towels are provided. Also they serve southern home-style cooking.
HUNTING
The hunts are 2 days, 1 night only, normally leaving after lunch on the second day. You are ferried over by barge. They can arrange to barge over one of your vehicles with all your belongings inside. The best of three guides, dogs, trucks, and jeeps will assure you of a qualified hunt. Guides will bring you back to the lodge for lunch, then you are off again in the afternoon. That evening the guides will bring the trophy boar back to camp, where pictures can be taken. The ranches have an abundance of varmint animals, such as raccoon, armadillo, rabbit, squirrel, which are free of charge.
In fact, all you need to bring on your hunt is your weapons, clothing, one 50 qt. cooler per boar, and your camera. A good weapon would include a rifle without a scope for short distance, or with a scope for longer distances, a .243 or larger; any bow that will kill a keer; any heavy handgun, .38 cal. or greater; or a shotgun with rifle slugs. Weapons not allowed are a 30 cal. carbine, AR15, Mini 14, 223, or any group who wishes to hunt with all pistols or all bow & arrows. Also feel free to bring extra soft drinks for your consumption. Everything else is furnished.
